One of the biggest hurdles for a lot of speakers is getting breathless when speaking in public.
Let me ask you one question: when speaking with your friends and family, do you experience breathlessness? Most likely, your answer would be NO. So if you do not run out of air during a friendly conversation, why is it that you have this problem when speaking in public? And how can this problem be solved?
1. Do not wait until you are completely out of air to take your next breath. For some reason, we are under the mistaken belief that we are not allowed to breathe until we come to some form of punctuation: a comma, a full stop, etc. But doing so inevitably results in a gasp for huge amount of air at the end of the sentence. And what happens next is you have too much air in your lungs. Which becomes a vicious circle: from no air in your lungs to too much air. Hardly a healthy breathing pattern!
Notice how in normal conversation you take a breath without even giving it a thought, and your breath and your speech flow naturally. So permit yourself to do the same when speaking in public – give yourself the right to take a breath whenever you want.
2. Treat your audience as if you were having a conversation with your friends or family members. This will make your tone of voice sound less formal, more engaging, and you will be less likely to run out of breath, as you will be breathing without giving it much thought.
